Self-Publishing
For contemporary composers, self-publishing has become a practical choice rather than an afterthought. The tools now exist to produce professional-quality scores, distribute them digitally, and manage sales without intermediaries who take a cut or lock you into restrictive terms. This allows composers to maintain ownership and control over their work.
The Digital Storefront
I am building my self-publishing portal using Gumroad, a well-established platform for digital products. Gumroad handles payment processing, delivery, and customer management, while leaving the creative and commercial decisions in my hands. Scores are sold as PDFs, which performers can print at home or through any print shop.
Building out the digital storefront is an ongoing task. I am steadily adding more of my scores to the portal, starting with works that are ready for immediate access and expanding from there. The goal is simple: make it easy for performers to find, purchase, and obtain the materials they need, with as little friction as possible.

Traditional music-publishing arrangements often leave composers with limited agency over pricing, licensing, and how their work is presented. For independent composers — particularly those writing for niche or emerging ensembles — self-publishing removes the gatekeeping barrier and the revenue split that can make small projects financially untenable.
More importantly, it keeps ownership in composer hands. This means retaining control over future licensing decisions, the ability to offer flexible instrumentation versions, and the freedom to set terms that align with how the work is actually performed. Each of these is a tool in the bag for any composer who wants their music to reach performers directly, without intermediary overhead or restrictions.
Technical Workflow
I compose and engrave using modern software, which produces clean, performance-ready PDF scores and parts. Each listing on Gumroad includes the full score, any individual parts needed, and any supplementary materials such as Max patches for works with electronics.
This setup is a tool I can extend over time. As new works are completed or existing works are revised, updated materials are pushed to purchasers automatically. And because the platform is built around direct digital delivery, performers receive what they need immediately rather than waiting on physical shipping.
