Program Note
I originally intended to compose a light-hearted work under the title Will Dance for Waffles—something absurd, playful, and perhaps a bit of personal therapy through arting. Instead, another piece emerged. On Awareness (2026) grew from anger, grief, and a growing frustration with willful harm, the dismissal of suffering, and the ease with which people can choose not to see or hear one another.
Although written as an acoustic work, On Awareness draws inspiration from electronic music processes. Delay and resonators become central developmental tools, creating layers of returning material and accumulating resonance. Voices repeat, overlap, distort, and persist, forming a space where what is heard cannot be so easily discarded.
At its heart, the work is concerned with listening: to those calling out, to those pushed aside, and to the truths we would rather avoid. It is both a demand and a plea: hear them. Hear yourself. Hear me.
